I loved the hard, “flat” swing seats we had as kids. We used to even stand up to swing. And it was easy to jump off the swing and fly through the air with the flat seats. You can’t do that with these soft, moldable-to-your-butt plastic seats these days.

When my eldest was a toddler, on swings in a playground, she was enjoying going really high. A child the same age next to her was being pushed by her mother, and going nowhere as high, asked to be pushed like my girl.

And promptly started screamed because she was so scared.

My little thrill seeker simply enjoyed the ride…

Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg will be on TV tonight here in the UK. She says in today’s “Daily Mirror” that she has sometimes been called “a brat” because of her environmental concerns. Calvin is often called a brat and he also has environmental concerns. In a recent Sunday strip in which he expressed concern for the environment, one of the commentators replied “Get a grip, Greta.”

Calvin wouldn’t like to be compared to a girl – very few boys do – but he would identify strongly with Greta Thunberg – especially when she was missing school for her environmental protest. That isn’t intended as criticism of Greta nor as criticism of Calvin’s environmental side which is one of his best characteristics.

When our kids had a swing set I thought I would give it a try (I was much lighter then.) It wasn’t the same; I had a funny feeling in the pit of my stomach at the bottom. The moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on….

I remember when a kid we had a tree growing next to the garage of the house, I asked dad to make a swing there which he did with a board, I spent lot of time on that swing, then I outgrew it, and dad then took it down. Grown up that same tree after 65 years died, My dad died 1999 and my mom in 2016.
