I’ve learned that emotional maturity is not blaming people for causing my feelings. Telling kids that they’ve hurt my feelings can set them up for a lifetime of misperception. If my feelings are hurt, that’s about my reaction, not their words. Teaching compassion & politeness is important and effective when we take responsibility & ownership for our own feelings. “When you make those comments about my appearance, I feel bad.” Subtle difference, but more honest & empowering.
One thing nobody tells you when you’re young is that body parts containing cartilage (nose and ears) keep on growing well into old age. Feet too, to some degree.
