    “Alien”, not “Aliens”. Totally different.

“Alien” made your heart pound with fear; “Aliens” made your heart pound with excitement.

I wonder how they can watch movies at a time when they haven’t even invented a chair? The guy is sitting on a stone.

If you have small soft stones they aren’t really painful. Passing them is weird however.

If the stone(s) are too big to pass, they thread a tube up into your kidneys through your urethra, blast the stones with ultrasound, and suck up the debris through the tube. It’s worse if you’re a male.

Thanks for the explanation, especially the comparison, that helps the patient a lot!

Will I die? Will the pain go away? Will I always have this stone?

Everyone dies. The pain and the stone may pass.

And soon cranberry juice (the tarter the better) came pass (no pun intended). It can sometimes help prevent UTI’s and should help prevent stones too. But it will not cure an infection, it will not remove stones, and drinking too much can cause an increase in kidney stones (8 ounces a day is enough. Extra oxalates are not a good idea!). Talk to a doctor – the internet is a lousy place to get medical advice a lot of the time. Talk to your doctor about dietary changes and tests to see how your kidneys are functioning. It’s less painful and deadly than being dumb.

I went to the doctor for kidney stones. During the exam, he asked if I had pain the various parts of my body. I answered yes. It turns out that I’ve had kidney stones all along and dismissed them as back pain, gas, etc. I’ve been passing them and not knowing it.

I finally got one big enough to get my attention. Fortunately, it passed on its own volition.

However, the good news is now that I know what to look for, I start forcing fluids. I always make sure I am adequately hydrated. I just overdo it a bit more when I think I’m passing a stone.

Been there, done that and she’s right. Keeping well hydrated at all times gets rid of them before they are big enough to be a problem, so I now drink like a fish. (Just don’t ask what!)

This is SOOO true. If you’ve never had a kidney stone, you just can’t relate. In my long life – it’s the most painful thing that ever happened to me. As it turned out – the doctor told me later that mine was unusually large – so he wasn’t too surprised about how much pain I was in. That was 10 years ago, and fortunately, I haven’t had any since.

Had a few kidney stones. when asked to describe the pain I said, imagine someone stuck an ice pick in your side and every few minutes they wiggle it around for about a minute.

Time to visit a lithotripter. (Crush the stones sonically. They pass out quicker and less painfully). And time to drink more water and decrease your sodium intake. YMMV.

I can only describe it as pain so bad you try to crawl out of your body.
