Rope is a means of descending from a cliff. And if your rope is too short to reach all the way to the bottom, then maybe it can reach to a ledge with a tree on it, allowing you to re-string the rope and descend safely. I did that once when I was a young man. I was very glad that the tree was rooted firmly at the ledge.
