And the kids aren’t too trustworthy either. You can trust a dog, up to a point. A cat? Not so much.

Your next ten years will be bad people trying to fill your head with bad things hoping to convince you to support their bad beliefs and actions.

Caulfield, You can’t trust any given adult to believe anything other than what he/she has concluded from experience and education. It doesn’t mean that what you will be told is unreliable or in any way false. That you must learn/decide for yourself after you have lived a few years longer.

All of the adults have conspired to lie to you about Santa Claus.

I thought Caulfield was clever enough to have observed a lot more than just that one thing.
