Run two-second sound bite with hyper-sensational title designed not only to hide the lack of independent verification but to incite uproar and promote the rebroadcast of falsity of the item.

I doubt news was often much different. We have discussed the era of Cronkite, Huntley & Brinkley, Ed Murrow et al. But news has rarely been pure; minstrels were gossips. I suspect more people want to hear what they hope to hear rather than what is happening.
