While the court of public opinion is fraught with defects, I don’t hold the conventional court in much higher standing. All jingoist declarations of how we have the best legal system in the world, yada yada, is so much horse puckey. The more money a defendant has, the longer it takes for justice to be rendered; there’s nothing fair or just about such an arrangement.
The court of public opinion chose to give hemlock to Socrates, and to choose the thief Barabbas over Christ. The mob is always like this, always will be.
Cynics sneer at and deride public opinion, yet how do we choose our elected officials?
Phrased differently, what would those cynics suggest as a superior alternative to democracy? Please cite examples to demonstrate the past successes of your preferred approach.
