My wife and I are not into the holidays. Her birthday is in January, mine in February, so the supply chain will be refilled by then. We’ll even buy Returns, at a substantial discount, of course.
I’ve ordered stuff already for the kids. Small items. I mostly give money. They are nieces, nephews and their kids. I haven’t a clue and to me money is more versatile than gift cards. I have gift cards to places I don’t even go. For friends, I give supermarket gift cards, they all eat.
……and of course, according to “popular media,” it’s all the present administration’s fault, never mind there’s a worldwide virus going around.. >HUGE eye-roll<
There is more to this than not having a “Winking, Blinking Rudolf Lawn Ornament” if Black Friday and the Holiday Season shopping is a bust, it will effect the economic recovery in a big way. For example there is nothing more useless than a “Winking Blinking Rudolf Lawn Ornament” that arrives in stores on Jan 10th. Stores take a hit cause they can’t sell it, shippers take a hit because they didn’t deliver on time, insurance companies take a hit when the claims are filed. The Lawyers however are dancing in the aisles of their offices.
“Headless chicken,” I’m thinking along the line, “headless horseman,” but I realized she was talking, “running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off.”I’m more the head without it’s chicken, paralyzed into inaction, just blinking occasionally.
My wife’s mother solved this problem by buying things she liked all year long, wrapping them up and putting them up in the closet. By the time Christmas arrived, she had forgotten what was in the packages and was pleasantly surprised Christmas morning.
I am ever so thankful my wife and I have reached a point where holiday gift-giving to the majority of our family has ceased. Now it is primarily about eat, drink and be merry. So much less stress.
I work in retail. We placed our orders for Christmas stock for this year back in January. So far I’ve gotten fewer than half of the shipments that were due to arrive before Oct.1 and most of those were missing over half the inventory I ordered. I have already sold out for the year on some Christmas items that customers pre ordered in August and won’t have any to sell in the store at all this year. And I am a food retailer. If you make Christmas cake you better get your glazed/candied pineapple now as that is already in short supply.
I usually shop throughout the year. I don’t go looking for anything in particular but if I happen to come across something that I know they will like, I get it. Unfortunately that has backfired on me. There was an incident and now I’m not speaking to a family member or their spouse. I’ve gotten several things for them already. I’ll probably find someone else to give them to or just keep them for myself.
We buy a gift each for husband’s two nieces for Christmas and he will find something to buy for himself for same (generally something he just would have bought anyway).
That is all the shopping done for the holidays. My niblings are in their late 20s/early 30s so we don’t buy them anything. One of his nieces is in junior high and the other in college.
Last year he ordered something from Amazon for each of them to be delivered to their mom as we knew we would not be joining for Christmas due to Covid. Gifts were ordered the first week in December. Not only did we have to pay for shipping, even though they were over Amazon’s minimum for free shipping (as they were coming from 2 different locations – and this added 1/3 more to the purchase), but younger niece’s gift did not arrive until over a month after it was ordered though it was suppose to be there in the standard time for free shipping (a week or 2 weeks?). We don’t normally order anything as there is always a problem or another when something is ordered – from any company – but we were not going to see them and he wanted the girls to have the gifts for Christmas – particularly the younger one.
We don’t buy gifts for siblings and their spouses or my mom or me. Just a waste of money to do so.

Buying American means you don’t have to wait for all those container ships waiting off shore to be unloaded. 8^ )

Arlo is right, “it is too late to shop early”. Shopping early for Christmas is done starting July 1.

What people haven’t caught onto is planned shortages….

I’m starting to think that the supply chain issues is a ploy by the retailers to start an early Christmas buying frenzy.
