Some interesting push back from Luann regarding Bernice’s aspirations of becoming a therapist. It’s actually refreshing to see any characters arguing. However Bernice still wins the day by talking about teaching adjacent career. Proving once again that she’s Luann’s superior and that Luann is the dolt.

Luann’s “Rare gift for working with kids” may kinda mean she’s sort of a kid yet. Her kids are really little. Getting kids to meet learning standards as they get a little older will require a more adult approach. I’d like to see Luann check out a little more of the rest of the world anyway.

I think Luann would be a great teacher. I think Bernice should butt out. First she insults Luann, and then she tries to cover it up by suggesting she could do other things involving children. Some friend!

    Luann!

By that “rare gift with kids” crack Bernice just implied you’d make a great “house wife.” Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

However, since Miz Halper has now chosen to go down the “jobs one is unsuitable for path,” you might want to imply that with her gift for throwing insults, making people feel bad and totally getting away with it, that She might make a much better I.R.S. Agent than a (SNORT) “therapist.”

Or better yet, the local Commissioner of Revenue. ;-)

Bernice starts out by saying that Luann isn’t exactly “academic.” This contradicts what the authors said not that long ago when Luann was offered a student assistant position in chemistry because of her high test scores. And she did get a student assistant position with the art instructor for what would likely be the same reason. These are not signs of a mediocre student. GnK need to get their act together.

Then Luann makes a crack about “Is this how you talk to your therapy clients.” WTF — Bernice is 19, a college freshman. What in god’s green acres is she doing with clients.

And Bernice confirms that she’s practicing Psychology without a license! And I might add that Luann is not a client since she never asked for Bernice to butt in.

Finally Bernice tries to spread oil on the water’s she riled up by saying Luann can work with kids without being a teacher. I assume she’s talking about being the Chuck E. Cheese mascot or something like that.

This is about the time Luann needs to set boundaries and tell Bernice to GTFO.

This week Bernice shows that she really has the potential to be a good psychologist. Luann is practically her sister, so it’s normal if she’s more direct with her. Living with the Degroots and having a relationship with Nil is really making her more open and calm♡. I love Luann’s reactions to Bernice’s words. She was really mad at her (finally!) when she thought Bernice was insulting her, and immediately open to her suggestions once the misunderstanding was cleared. Now I’m really interested in what Bernice will suggest. Maybe, she really could have the best career advice for her BFF Luann!?

I think Bernice thinks she is smart but she studies to get the grades and psychology is not the hardest curriculum. Luann likely is just as smart or smarterbut does not – or has not had to apply herself in anything she is not crazy about.

Thinking back to the earlier strip where Luann herself compares Kids 1st to tutoring, she should consider Head Start or some other preschool option. There are many preschools. She could work as a teacher’s aide while getting her degree.

The thing is having a “rare gift for working with kids” would probably make her an excellent teacher. I’ve known teachers with the smarts who were lousy teachers, and often quit the profession in a few years. I suspect that teaching, like preaching, needs a calling to make one particularly good at it.

Luann did well in chemistry such that the instructor asked her to be his TA. Maybe she could study to be a pediatric nurse (mentioned above). A sick child needs more than a trained medical professional. They need that trained person who can also make them feel better about themselves and the treatments they’re getting.

Luann does have the makings of a good teacher. Being academic is not the key factor in being a good teacher – especially with younger children.
