Unless an alien civilization is relatively close to us (within about 24 Light-years), we would not have gotten a reply yet. That’s 24 years for our signal to get to them and 24 years for a return message to get back to us = for a total of 48 years. (1974 is 48 years ago.)
With our current state of unpreparedness, I’d say no news is good news. Besides, we’re messing up our planet all by ourselves without having help from aliens.
Some comments I have read are assuming that other lifeforms have the exact same technology as we have here currently. “it’ll take 48 years to get an answer”, etc. There is a distinct possibility that other lifeforms are much more advanced than we are here on earth, and could answer much faster. If they wanted to do that. Maybe they don’t?
Nobody ever takes into account the technology involved. What are the chances that they just happened to create a receiver that picks up and interprets our radio signals? Pretty slim.

“The warranty on your starship is about to run out.” Yeah, no wonder no intelligent life has responded to us.

I’m pretty certain they put Earth on the Do-Not-Call list.

Actually, the first tv waves to leave Earth were from the late ’40s to early ’50s, so would you call such people back?

Maybe they have answered. Maybe that’s where all the calls regarding my car’s extended warranty are coming from.

Yeah, but we left a message. And not just trying to fool or cheat the recipient; I mean, do they have vehicles without warranties?

Aha. Just what the alien astronaut theorists had always suspected!

Maybe the radio transmission got lost in the grip of a black hole … or in customer relay support … ;)
