Ask your mother, Nelson, to take you to the grocery store in order to know what an artichoke is.

Speaking of artichokes, donā€™t bother doing this recipe from Food Wishes:

Kind of like eating crabs. Good eating, but too much work.

Poor Nelson. By his age, Iā€™d already had (part of) an artichoke, and learned the joy of lemon-butter dripping off my elbows (hey, I was about 6 or 7, I think). Iā€™ve loved them ever since, and thatā€™s longer than Iā€™ve loved most things. Though things did get a little rough when I was losing my baby incisorsā€¦

Since then, I have of course learned that there are other excellent vehicles for lemon-butter, garlic-butter and occasionally honey-butter. (swallows some saliva).

Thatā€™s the trouble with old sayings. One first has to educate the listener about the context.

Iā€™ve never had an artichoke. And the online pictures donā€™t inspire me. But the saying would work well with ā€œpomegranateā€. Barely worth all the effort to get to the seeds.

Makes you wonder, who was the first person to look at an artichoke and say:

I think I could eat that??

Earl described a golf ball. Itā€™s a lot of effort to peel off the outer shell, and then get through all of the wound-up material that surrounds the inner core. Once you get to that core? Itā€™s pretty useless.

Iā€™ve often wondered about the person who first looked at an artichoke and thought, ā€œI bet I could eat that.ā€ Of course, Iā€™ve wondered the same thing about Brussels sprouts.

An artichoke is an edible version of a thistle, and if you wait too long to eat it, it will bloom into a beautiful flower in your garden. Thankfully not as pokey as a thistle.

I saw this in a Pickles strip, many years agoā€¦young people talk about the future because they have no past. Old people talk about the past because they have no future.
