Gary only draws this strip when the skies are clear and there is snow in the Cascade range. The days when the mountains are “out” with such clarity are precious and enjoyed by us locals. The Olympic range to the west is even more shy, but it has been showing up these days.
Ah, Circuit City. What memories. I remember being in one on August 16, 1977, buying a pair of speakers, when news of the death of Elvis Presley came across 40 TV screens all at once.
I had to make a career adjustment when SCSI (Small Computer Standard Interface – or “Scuzzi”) got replaced. Knowing what each wire was for became irrelevant. That phase of technology didn’t last long.
Reading together on the couch and not a screen in sight. Ahhh, the good old days. Today it’s the TV on, the wife doing Sudukus on a tablet while texting on her phone and me working crosswords and Googling stuff on my Smartphone when I can’t figure out a word. No wonder my eyes are going to crap. The only one blissfully unplugged is the dog sleeping in the crook of my knee.
Long ago while unemployed and desperate, I interviewed with them for a sales job to hold me over. It was going great until the interviewer asked me what I thought about extended warranties. I told him I thought they were a gigantic waste of a customer’s money. The interviewer calmly replied that the chain made a significant portion of their revenue on them. I got up, we shook hands and I left.
I recall the Mac (i.e. Apple) section of Circuit City shrinking during the late ’90s to the point that it only occupied a small corner at the back of the store…
Ah, I remember Circuit City… We bought a Panasonic Television there in 1983, but not the extra coverage, so when it was fried by a lightening strike in 1986, we had to pay out of pocket to have it repaired. The person said the extra coverage would have covered that, but I really doubt it. The repair cost was too low for our homeowners insurance to cover. The damned TV always had a pink tone after that, no matter what adjustments we tried to make. We also bought our first dishwasher and a microwave from there when I found out I was pregnant in 1984. Awe, gee….
SCSI cables have the same kind of plug as a parallel cable. Another employee and I found that out when we were trying to attach a printer to the founder/CEO’s Mac in the early ‘90s. Yup, only Apple used a SCSI interface for printers. It was before USB. It blowed up real good. She and I were terrified because the founder had Trumpian temperament. The department head protected us. He told the founder that, "There was a catastrophic failure of the motherboard. We’re getting it replaced right now."
I purchased my first home computer in 1995….pre Windows 95. As I was ordering the Computer I told the sales clerk that I wanted an upgrade to a 28.8 modem. He said the 14.4 was more than fast enough. Only a few year later I traded up to a 56 modem…

Does the last frame say “Like buss” or “Like bliss”? Oh wait. Comparing to the U in “about” it must be “Like bliss”. But I still don’t get the joke.

1997…the modem that Mike picked up was probably one of those new high-speed 56K beauties. $200, but worth every penny.

Yet another example of people thinking that you have to start out in the Garage if you want your Home Business to be successful.
Darn those guys at Apple, anyway.
