More of Watterson’s briliant artistry. Frame two is four frames divided by trees, showing the action while keeping Calvin’s argument tied together. The top down view in frame four emphasises the rapidity of the plunge to doom that comes from following stupid short term self-interest.
Nope. I’m not going to start… I’m not going to mention politics or any political parties or their “philosophies” at all. Not one bit. People wouldn’t like that. Many, MANY people really do treasure their ignorance…
The validity of this strip has become even more relevant today. It makes one wonder: at what point is a critical mass of wilful stupidity reached from which there is no turning back? I hope not to find out.
Yesterday, I gave another account of how I came from seeing Hobbes as part of Calvin’s imagination to accepting Bill Watterson’s view that Hobbes is not part of Calvin’s imagination but part of a reality that Calvin can see but other characters cannot. As usual, someone told me I was overthinking. I don’t think I’m overthinking as this is my all-time favourite comic strip and I love to think about different aspects of it including the complexity of Hobbes’s personality and the things Hobbes does which Calvin doesn’t know about.
What a PERFECT explanation of the logic employed by the anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers, the only difference being that many of them die from their fall off the cliff (and push others off with them).

Not an insult, but I’m a little tired of the mini cart rides.

I always wondered how Calvin and Hobbes survive falling off these high cliffs during their wagon and sled rides.

“…And change means doing things that aren’t fun.”
Nonsense! If you’re a miserable killjoy, change can only bring MORE fun.

I sometimes wonder if Bill Watterson and Matt Groening ever shared notes on predicting the future through illustration.

Their social dilemma speaks volumes about the human psyche. Bit of a history lesson here, I think. But how many people actually learn from history?

I couldn’t agree more. That is a fine sophistic philosophy. It even works sometimes, If you’re rich or famous.
