For more modern ones, Nolan Ryan’s strikeout record. No one’s ever going to even come close. Only three pitchers ever had more strikeouts/inning. Only one pitcher in the last century pitched more innings, and the active leader in innings pitched is over TWO THOUSAND innings behind. NO one has played more seasons. The way pitchers are protected these days, even with the explosion of strikeouts, no one will ever come within 1500 strikeouts of Ryan, and that much would be remarkable.

My Grandfather (born 1898) told me he was at a game where Ty Cobb stole 2nd on the first pitch, then to mess with the pitcher, ran back to first on the second pitch; causing the umpires to dig through the rule book before allowing it. Supposedly, he then stole second on the third pitch. I’ve never seen the story anywhere, so I’m not sure if Grandpa was kidding me. Maybe Ellis might know.
