Class in session at that age was never a problem for me. As long as I had an unblocked view of a window the trip was on. Not as enjoyable or exciting as with a book, but doable.
It took me about 50 years to become a tolerable speller. And even so, I mostly recognize when something’s NOT spelled right rather than knowing how to spell it.
Just so I’m clear, Caulfield’s constant disruptive and rude behaviour is because he’s a bored genius who should actually be teaching a class at Harvard rather than attending one in elementary school. Yet he doesn’t want to be around for a spelling test, constantly doesn’t hand in work, and despite his burgeoning aptitude hasn’t progressed past second grade.
Got it.
I wonder if, maybe, instead of being a misunderstood prodigy, he is in reality just an annoying little git that the author uses as a tool to make fun of the old schlubbies that don’t like cycling and ultrarunning?
After our kids were grown and we could go alone we really enjoyed going to Disney and Universal during the week. Crowds much smaller and we could go when the weather was tolerable.
