Wesley D. Bates. He’s gonna be somebody. He’s no ordinary kid. He uses his middle initial. He’s gonna be important.

It can get out of hand and you can get in trouble that might go on your permanent record. Do you want to take that risk?

One nice upside of reprints is seeing arcs you REALLY like again, sometimes with fresh eyes of people who don’t really care to binge the archive and are thus reading this for the first time. This arc is a faviorite of mine and while I can’t get into why till a bit later (possibly next week) it has a really sharp moral. I also noticed here that Laurence and Brian kinda hot potato the braincell in the group. Usually one of them is the resonable one and one of them is acting dumb like the rest of the group. In this case it’s Laurences’ turn.

The more things change… High school kids still walk out for reasons they only have a vague notion of but for the same purpose: A. Get out of school early and B. Hook up with someone they meet. Guess it’s better than setting things on fire and looting stores.

Most of the protestors come to make some fun, without knowing the purpose of protest.

I’m not familiar with this arc, but I’m wondering: Are the “school” buses actually free, and so the “fare hike” doesn’t really exist, at least not for them?

In Austin you have to live 2+ miles from the school to ride the school bus (free). The school district has also contracted with the local public transit system to provide fare free rides for students; not sure if the students have to show/swipe their school IDs. I would assume it is similar with this school but the students have to pay a fare to ride city bus.

their parents are the ones who pay the bills, so why do they even care. And is it normal in Canada to charge kids to ride the school bus ?

Filled with righteous indignation and thrilled with the excitement of getting involved, I happily joined the protest.

Sure, what’s wrong with a little spontaneous fun and rage. Let that brutality begin. Someone call the cops and the National Guard. Hand out the Molotov cocktails and bricks. Let’s PARTY!! …tsk …sigh

That sounds like a lot of high school protests. Half the protesters are mature enough to actually know what they’re doing and care about the issues; the other half are just excited for a chance to cause a ruckus.

There could be a strip where the day after school they pat themselves on the back after protesting, then go into a classroom:

    Blackboard: MATH TEST TODAY

The kids’ smugness turns to shock as nobody except Lawrence has studied for the test

Lawrence does have a point. Before any action is taken on anything, find out all the issues first.

The “issues” often turn out to be false talking points, manufactured to profit professional rabble rousers, a’la BLM and ANTIFA.

Since this is an ongoing storyline I have to ask, why aren’t they riding school buses?

Also, why is it everytime I sign in to comment, I’m brought to a different comic strip and have to use the back button on my browser?

I was an angry teenager once, and now I’m an angry adult, and nobody I know ever talked this way. Lynn Johnston is setting up a strawman to be knocked down. Transportation is usually people’s second largest expense after housing, and bus fare hikes fall on the poor most heavily.
