There is no W in Icelandic, so many Icelanders have trouble making the W sound when theyâre speaking English, and often say V instead. We lived in Oklahoma for 13 years, and my mom managed to learn the W sound, at least in most cases. She could, for example, say âsweatâ correctly, but she never managed to say âsweaterâ. She always said âsvetterâ.
When she was about 3 or 4, our daughter called a spoon a âfoopâ. No idea where that came from, but my father tried to get her to say âspoonâ by constantly having her repeat the sounds âspâ and âoonâ. When he showed her a spoon, and asked her what it was, she said âa foopâ. He gave up.
