There is no W in Icelandic, so many Icelanders have trouble making the W sound when they’re speaking English, and often say V instead. We lived in Oklahoma for 13 years, and my mom managed to learn the W sound, at least in most cases. She could, for example, say “sweat” correctly, but she never managed to say “sweater”. She always said “svetter”.
When she was about 3 or 4, our daughter called a spoon a ‘foop’. No idea where that came from, but my father tried to get her to say ‘spoon’ by constantly having her repeat the sounds ‘sp’ and ‘oon’. When he showed her a spoon, and asked her what it was, she said ‘a foop’. He gave up.

That’s much better than putting marbles in her mouth and making her say “The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain.”
