yeah, bringing in carts while it’s cold out is no fun…I can relate in February 2020 which was a few months after my hire at the same grocery store I’m still employed (I had to lug small amount of carts at a time through the snow; at least the snow started melting a day or two later)

When I worked at Wal*Mart (night shift) we would have to stop stocking to go out and get carts.

Meanwhile it’s in the 70s here in Baltimore

Try pushing carts up hill in the rain. And getting one out of a ditch.

Hmm, if Mike gets sick from that job, he could sue the company.

Then, he’d have enough to buy a brand new car.

lol I literally had to do this today. Thankfully I make a bit more than Mike does at it, but the drastic cutbacks in store hours (which are pretty much Walmart’s fault, as they made so much money slashing hours to justify their prices that everyone had to copy them or die) have meant that the old “bagging clerk” job is gone and cashiers now just have to do this in most places.

Ironically I don’t remember what the temperature was back in 1993, but I live north of Toronto near where Michael lives, and on November 8 2022, he wouldn’t be cold at all. This past week the temperatures have reached a high of 20 C. Close to 70 F for you Americans. Is this more proof of global warming?

The guy in the third panel sure is lousy with employee relations, calling his coworker “Patterson”. Does he not have a clue that his first name is Michael?

Ah typical teenager. Coat, COAT, I don’t need no stinking coat.

Middle son was a cross country and track athlete in high school and college. Wore short and short sleeved shirts year round. Now that he is older he seems to have embraced the idea of dressing for weather. Imagine that.

Just remember, no matter how much you suffer at work, you’re not getting paid more but you may get paid longer.

Been there, done that! AH good ol’ high school job days. :) At least I was smart enough to wear a coat! Utah gets pretty cold in the winter.. but it’s no match for Canada!

He needs to bring a coat or they need to provide one. When I worked at a food service department they had heavy insulated coats to wear when going into the 0 degree freezer.

Have they mentioned Mike’s supermarket job recently? I was under the impression he’d given it up once school started. Though all the recent talk of trying to save money should have clued me in.

It’s called a jacket, lad.

Reminds me of our adult son, he work’s same job though varies, brings carts in, works cashier, helps customer’s take carts of their paid goods out, and works at self check out. He dresses according to weather, found out he is allergic to polyester on his legs, and HR different state cut one of his days off on Monday.

I remember up north I’d see young workers (read “kids”) rounding up carts when it was snowing, and they’d get totally wet, doing it without coats or caps of any kind. Don’t know if any of them got sick because of it. Down south there was one store that required the kids to run with the carts to bring them in. It’s a miracle that none of them were hit by cars moving in the parking lot.
