Today’s strip reminds me of those old Wolf and Sheepdog cartoons which were directed by legendary animation director Chuck Jones and mostly written by Mike Maltese who later left Warner Bros to write scripts for Hanna-Barbera TV shows which had much poorer animation.

In those classic cartoons, the wolf and sheepdog live next door to one another and call each other by their forenames Ralph and Sam when on their way to work, taking their lunch break and going home from work. Ralph Wolf strongly resembles the coyote who is known as Wile E. Coyote in his cartoons with Bugs Bunny. He just has a red nose instead of a black one. Most of those cartoons were also directed by Chuck Jones and written by Mike Maltese. Mike Maltese died in 1981 and Chuck Jones died in 2002.

As I have mentioned in previous years. 30 October 1976 was the date of the last issue of Monster Fun Comic. An appropriate date as it was one day before Halloween. The comic merged with Buster to form Buster and Monster Fun Comic with the first edition dated 6 November 1976 which is the day after Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night.

Buster, of course, was originally billed as “Buster – Son of Andy Capp”. This title was soon dropped but was revived in the 1990s. When I read Buster Comic in the 1970s, the cover strip was titled “Buster’s Dream World” in which Buster was asleep and dreaming in the first panel and we would see his dream before he woke up in the final panel. This was replaced in 1974 by “Buster’s Diary” which would begin with Buster writing an entry in his diary and we would then see the story behind it told in flashback.
