I’ll bet they were dirty socks. We had a small dog, she’d push over the hamper, then run around with a mouthful of my dirty socks. Wouldn’t chew them, just get them all soggy.

Our German Shepherd ran the calf back inside the fence. We praised him and rewarded him. (We suspected him of having something to do with her being out in the first place but let it slide.)

After that, he ran her out every day so he could be rewarded for herding her back in.

My neighbor rewards her dog every time he does what he is going to do anyway outside, and gives him a treat. we often walk with them at night. My dog has learned that when her dog goes, my dog is going to get a treat. Never underestimate the food IQ of a dog who lives to eat. My dog won’t even go on those walks until after they go back home. She also won’t leave their driveway until they are inside. Once they are in, we can continue our walk. I cannot explain that other than we used to often walked with someone with vision issues, and we always walked her home for safety reasons, but we didn’t wait for her to get inside and close the door. Eventually I realized my dog would walk anyone home we were out walking with. They all think it’s cute, so I am good with it.
