My high-end designer sneakers are made in Vietnam. I wonder how much Chau Dieu gets for her labor. A lot, probably, because it is, after all, a communist workers paradise.
So a worker in some third world country makes 89 cents an hour and produces 100 pairs of shoes in an hour. I do realize there is overhead, but why does one of these pair of shoes cost over $100? Ok, I am sure that the big-name basketball player who spends 30 seconds telling us that HE wears them gets his cut, but where does the rest of the cost come from?
If we doubled the worker’s salary, that would raise the price of the shoes by ALMOST another penny. How inflationary!
I don’t condone sweatshops, but the implication that there’s some kind of point system of good and bad deeds to get into Heaven is patently false. How do we even know if we’ve been good enough? Who is keeping score?
If you consider how few people can enter heaven – if the religion’s yardsticks are taken seriously – then the demand for theses frocks is low. Not much business for sweatshop owners.
