I used to live in Mesa AZ, TOP cop of the state was clocked speeding, weaving in and out of traffic on the freeway. Top cop said he was on his way to a memorial service for a dead cop with the widow on the 12th anniversary of his death. She was wearing white and couldn’t stop laughing. Stopping cop had to apologize. I still have that headline on my browser. BUT they buried the story

Sounds like the company I work for. Every year we have to sign an “Ethics Agreement” because of the unethical doings of our CEOs and BOD’s.

If we think about it, it is logically necessary for regulations to not apply to the people in a position to write them. There are exceptions in exceptional circumstances; 800 years ago English King John was coerced into signing what became the Magna Carta, written by barons but restricting the King. I can’t think of a modern equivalent, although treaties are similar.

In America, and I presume everywhere law is derived from Old England, governments cannot be brought before courts of that same or lower level; the dictum is “a creature does not control its creator.” Courts are creatures (creations) of governments.

Rules and regulations can be used as a scape goat.

How many people get out of doing the right thing by stating “I’m not ALLOWED to do that.”

Many people at work won’t step a quarter inch (or 6.35 mm for you metric folk) out of their job description. As long as they stick strictly to the rules, all their failures are NOT their fault.

Perhaps the ultimate rule book is the Bible. It amazes me how many people believe that if they just follow every rule to the letter, then they are good people. My personal belief is that there’s a lot more in the book than is written on the pages and you need to use your brain and heart to figure it out.

Don’t get me wrong: rules are great when applied to the circumstances for which they were made. If everyone made it up as they went along, the morning commute would be more chaotic than it already is. In fact, most accidents happen when people break traffic rules.

However, taken to extremes hiding behind the rules is cowardly and sometimes even evil. As was often heard in testimony at Nuremburg: “I was only following orders.”

Get things done by the book when you can and in spite of it when you have to.
