He’s an odd duck, all right. A bit of a loon really; but he quacks me up.

So the ladies aren’t the only ones who can do these things to people, I see.

He is now ducking out before the boss arrives.

The phrase “get your ducks in a row” is an American idiom that means to be well-organized or prepared for something. It is thought to have originated in the late 19th century, and there are a number of theories about its origin.

One theory is that it comes from the game of bowling, in which a row of pins are knocked down by a ball. The pins are sometimes called “ducks,” and to have all of your ducks in a row would be to have all of your pins in the right position to be knocked down.

Another theory is that it comes from the practice of shooting at ducks at a fairground attraction. When all of the ducks are lined up in a row, it is easy to shoot them one after another.

The phrase is thought to have become popular in the early 20th century, and it is now a common idiom used in a variety of contexts.

I love the term, but the first time I heard it, early in my working career, all I could think of was “What????…”

I once found a set of four small wooden ducks at a yard sale. They would sit on the wall of my cube, all in a row.

Several years ago, I had a boss who liked to say, “We need to get all of our ducks in a row.” Eventually, a co-worker purchased dozens of rubber ducks and gave them to the rest of their team. Our cubicles were populated with rubber ducks. The boss got the joke.

I no longer work there, but I still have my ducks. They’re sitting under my computer monitor.

For years people have given me rubber duckies. At one point I have them all in row on my cubical wall. Then one year on my birthday, while I was on vacation, my co-workers bought about 75 ducks and covered my cubical. Was never able to get all my ducks in a row afterwards, though I did appreciate the ducks
