Donna got it in one. Whenever I got into trouble as a kid, my foster dad would always explain why I was in trouble. Yes, that includes the time when he scared me straight when my foster brother broke his, well, everything after I goaded him to jump off the roof only for him to miss the pool. He told me his explosive anger was because he was worried and that he would lose his mind if anything were to happen to any of us, including myself. I appreciated that. It made me understood that his anger only came from a place of love. I understood my foster dad sees the world as an already dangerous place and there should be no need for us to make it even MORE dangerous. We talked, we listened, and that made us see eye to eye with each other.

In many cases the best time to discuss the Why is sometime after the fact. In the heat of the moment, no one listens. Kids don’t really care why. But later, when time has passed and emotions have settled a bit, then comes the discussion.

If there could be more balance like this between couples, there would be more happy family unions out there! … :)

My parents never grounded me. Beat me, yes. Grounded, no. I don’t advocate their method of parenting.
