Well, one of Einstein’s thought experiments was that if one was in an accelerating elevator in space or stationary in a gravitational field, then one couldn’t tell the difference. Perhaps this elevator has a very LONG shaft so this can be tested.
A friend of mine had a good grip on relative position but a lot of difficulty with absolute directions. As she complained once about NSEW, “They change every time you turn around.” What she meant was that, if you start out facing north and turn around, west is no longer left. I kept trying to point out, “Yeah, but it’s still west!”, but it just didn’t compute for her.
