āLest we forgetā Paraphrase: the majority of mankind sleeps safely because rough [loyal and honorable] men stand ready to shield them from those who would harm them.
It is because of those men AND women that many of us worry less about being harmed by foreign arms. But, our feeling of safety is shrinking because behind that shield, crimes against citizens are increasing.
Letās remember why today is observed. In 1868, Union General John Logan issued General Orders #11, the first Memorial Day Order. He said, āIf other eyes grow dull and other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remains in us.Let us, then, at the time appointed, gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with choicest flowers of springtime; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from dishonor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us as sacred charges upon the nationās gratitudeāthe soldierās and sailorās widow and orphan.ā
I confess to getting a little irritated when I see ads for commercial interests saying āHappy Memorial Dayā. Aināt nothinā happy about this occasion, folks!

Thereās a difference between a moment of silence and being told to shut up for a moment, Caulfield.
