At Caulfield’s age (and for quite awhile longer) I was a walking reader. That turns out to be a lot safer than you think: We had actual sidewalks (well, mostly) and the curbs at the corners reminded me to look up and around… and hold my place with my finger while I crossed. Too, people were just naturally a little more polite than they seem to be now: If I was reading as we approached each other, they dodged me without rancor. Though I didn’t read if it was crowded.
For some strange reason, people that don’t pay attention to where they’re walking don’t run into each other. Just people that see them and dodge out of their way.
So far at least, haven’t heard of anyone selling accident insurance specifically for ‘incidents that occur due to unanticipated intersections with other humans, immovable objects, moving vehicles, fountains, etc, while concentrating on cell phones.’
I just love seeing people involved with their phones walk right into traffic. Depending on your perspective, it either happens too often, or not often enough.
The dude typing on his cell phone wants to crash into the girl with the earbuds. When observing the “what’s all around us” everything is not always as it appears.
I love listening to podcasts and audio books while I take my dogs for long walks. But I use the speaker on my phone and the phone goes into the pocket. I have to be situationally aware and hear what is coming up around me.

Sometimes people can’t see the macro for all the minuscule.

Won’t be long though.

Great philosophy, but Caulfield’s observation detracts from it.

Guy with his phone is getting Google to ID the berries. Lady is listening to an audio nature tour explaining the environment and history of the area.
Jef needs Pig’s understander from the other day.

Hopefully the guy gets out of his phone long enough to see what’s around him.

And in Michigan in the summer, “what’s all around us” is flocks of huge mosquitoes!

The lady with earbuds looks like she is talking. You would think the guy would hear her.
