This scene reminds me of the Stanley Ellis story, ‘Speciality of the House’. One of the main characters was-uh-ensnared by his interest in a restaurant’s special dish(spooky tale).
In 2020, Ann Druyan’s TV Series Cosmos: Possible Worlds did an episode on Nikolai Vavilov, the Soviet biologist who started the world’s first seed bank but ran afoul of the dictator Josef Stalin and was sentenced to the gulag. As Wikipedia describes the episode, “Vavilov traveled 5 continents assembling a treasury of the worlds seeds. He dreamed that science could be the means to end hunger. His refusal to tell a scientific lie cost him his life. The heroism of his colleagues and its direct impact on your life is one of the most stirring stories in the history of science.” Druyan notes the irony that this man who did more than anyone else in history to end world hunger perished by being allowed to starve to death.
That almost made sense a century ago. But that was before the P… bomb came into focus just like the lilies in the old farm pond. Local farms are being turned into housing as well as are many golf courses. Part of the rising food price is the diesel and aviation fuel costs to get things into the metro areas. It’s a new version of “guns v butter” becoming parks or housing.
The world produces enough food to feed everyone on the planet. The problem is access and availability, both of which are disrupted by things like extreme weather, food waste, one’s gender and conflict.
Nobody seems to really know what he died of. The prison documentation says one thing, various authors say other things. Verifiable stuff is in short supply.
That’s the only way ‘they’ will keep me from my morning coffee and nosh, usually something sweet. Yeah, they keep saying at my age, I should watch what I eat. Well, if I watch a doughnut long enough, I’ll eat it.
Lay off the sugar (carbs) and processed food, or at least cut down as much as you can and then cut down even more. Exercise, burn more than you take in and you will lose some weight. Get your waist down to ½ of your height. It is difficult to totally cut things out, so I suggest you cut them in half, get used to that and then cut that in half and reduce that as you continue. YMMV

And if you go to the Wiley Bears Diet Center, you’re GUARANTEED to lose weight while the bears put on weight.

Do you get your own room or do you have to share one with a cast member of Phantom of the Opera (I still have the model from the 1925 film)
