Different people – different minds – my best grades were always in math. It made sense.

Understanding is good, but implementing is much better!

Understanding the steps but not taking them, that describes a lot of us.

It doesn’t mean you understand your shortcomings or that you’re aware of the steps needed to correct them. Your teacher is pointing out the shortcoming, and unless you’re seeing a tutor or spending more time on homework you’re taking no steps to correct them. And Dad’s expression says he’s not falling for that line.
