Oh, Frazz – you missed a chance to educate! You should have explained to the lad that while an avocado is a perfectly acceptable fruit, when mashed with diced onion & tomato, some chili powder, and a touch of lemon juice (to forestall browning), it becomes The Nectar Of The Gods – aka guacamole.
Which is, of course, never served on toast shingles.
While I’m not ready to do away with nouns, I have moved toward not describing people by nouns, because I don’t like it for myself. Every group I belong to, I don’t represent stereotypically, so I’d rather not encourage people to get the wrong idea about me by starting a sentence with “I am a(n).”
Already when I was kid I had a bad stomach. Went to camp the summer I was 11. Great camp, lake, horses, cabins, dining hall with a fire place. Thing is, one of the things they served was chipped beef on toast complete with “cream” sauce (my stomach is threatening as I write this.) Never heard of it til then, never been near it since. They made up for by baking a blueberry pie for the cabin that picked the most berries. It was a VERY good pie!

Not for me. I prefer my guac in a bowl with some salsa and some sour cream with a side of tortilla chips.

I dunno about nouning adjectives, but I do know that you can verb nouns. And as Calvin says: It weirds language.

Saying that avocado is guacamole is like saying an egg is an omelet.

Traditionally, if it’s served on a “shingle,” it’s perceived as being less appetizing.

Let’s not forget nounification.

“Guacamole on a shingle” is hysterical! My wife eats that most mornings; makes me gag.

“On a shingle”…reminds me of what the Navy calls creamed chipped beef on toast.

Well, Kid, adjectives are versatile but it depends on the mental agility of the user to get best effect.

Guacamole is much more than just mashed avocado. And much tastier.

Its guacamole on a shingle. Also, spreading it on toast is a great way to use leftover guacamole!
