In this situation, the man/husband/male partner has no idea what to do, and realizes that he is in a no win situation whether he says anything or not! In my experience the woman just wants someone to listen to her vent and not offer solutions, which is the normal male response. Of course he might also get in trouble for NOT offering solutions.

A couple of hours would’ve been a great opportunity for Rick to practice his meditation techniques.
