One of the few phrases I remember from High School French is “Vous parler comme une vache espagnole.” French do not appreciate people trying to speak their language.

Arlo, if you don’t know what you are saying, don’t say it.

Don’t be too hard on Luddie. He just mistook Arlo for a parrot.

Ludwig looks so frustrated that he’s not getting his message across.

A dog would consider Arlo’s growling “play” and play along with him.

My experience is that the French enjoy other peoples and are very gracious as long as you make at least some effort to meet them half-way. I have thoroughly enjoyed all my visits to France, and spoke French every time.

Arlo, your car grammar is atrocious, and you not only misinterpreted, you mocked.

Most Americans could not translate that French phrase, since there is no reason to need to. A great many of us Canadians speak English and French, while many Americans speak English and Spanish for obvious reasons.

In first grade, they tried to teach us French. Can’t remember any of it.

Either Luddie doesn’t like to be mimicked or Arlo sounded to much like a Tomcat.

I was learning Gaelic Irish some years ago (on cassettes!). I was doing OK, until the chapter on preferences. The question was, “Would you like some whiskey?”. The intended answer was "No, I’d prefer orange juice). I realized right then, that although the speakers on the tape might sound Irish, they obviously weren’t!.
