Sometimes when it rains, i leave the window open an inch or so to hear the sound it makes on the umbrella covering the hummingbird feeder. I’m usually out in only a few minutes.
Off topic: I don’t remember who recommended the series Hamish Macbeth to me. I just finished the last episode. Wish there were many more. I’ll probably watch it again. They killed off my favorite character!!
Funny thing about rain. I used to get out of it as fast as I could when I was a kid. Then came football and I spent many a Friday standing in the rain. I got used to it and realized its not coming down as hard as the tin roofs tell you. Later on in life, slogging through the wet hearing it go plink plink on my helmet and not complaining along with the rest of the troop. You get accustomed to it, but it is rarely comfortable.
Three kinds of noise: white (traffic, air conditioning, etc.), pink (rhythmic non-musical, like rain on an umbrella), and blue ( music, of course) . Wallace’s screech owl will be white, for sure.
I do a mean screech owl call, too, Wallace! So good, it has not only fooled birding guides, but also brought in Great Horned Owls (which will snack on screech owls given the chance)..
I stayed at a B&B on the coast of Massachusetts once. The pilings it rested on were right against the seawall, and it was high tide at night during the week I was there. My room was over the water. The ocean lapping against the seawall at night was the best sound ever.
While at a beach rental hanging out with my grandmother on the covered deck, I imitated the morning dove call I heard nearby – it flew over and landed on our table.
Was hoping for some rain as I’ve just started planting…very difficult this year, as the weeds settled in early during false spring before the March snows. We should be hearing more barred owls soon—a couple of them (possibly an actual pair) have been sounding off lately.

Even Seagull is enjoying the sound of rain hitting the umbrella.

Waking up on a windless night and hearing rain on the roof over your head (and NO plink … plink from a leak) is a great thing.

I think someday Wallace will try to build a rocket to go to the moon.
