i have a barn that previous owners never mucked out. The spoiled hay & straw is 3 feet deep in places, packed down like plywood, & the bottom layer is still damp from urine. It took the better part of a week to get just a quarter of the stall area clear to the concrete floor. It has to be done with a pick & shovel since there’s no way to get a skidsteer through the door.

i will say that when it’s rototilled into the garden, it makes great fertilizer & winter cover, but does it ever reek!

In Malta, they fertilize their fields largely with pig manure. In the summertime, this results in a particular miasma that hangs over the islands wherever you go. Beautiful place, though.

Years ago, the local race track would deliver “long manure” in garbage trucks to small private properties. We used it around our small saplings for mulch and mild fertilization. It was also thus easier to mow around the small plantings. It was mostly shredded straw, but with just enough manure so it wasn’t excessively “hot.”

It would steam in the wintertime as it decayed, yet chunks of ice remained within the core until mid-June. I would pitch-fork it bit by bit into a wheelbarrow and spend hours spreading it around. Mice and snakes inhabited it for the shelter and warmth.

A few times I uncovered nested rabbits and accidently skewered some with the fork — which I hated! Bull Snake eggs were in there, too. (Bull Snakes get about 5 feet long around here; and unfortunately are mistaken often for rattlesnakes and summarily killed.)

Ha! Unadulterated and pure street sweepings of short manure are a thing of the past in most cities these days … more like pure human fecal-altercation …!

No wonder people took up smoking, to mask the stench of their gardens, and gutters.

And the electronic sign in front of St. Teresa of Calcutta says, “The best things in life are always within your reach.”

They do not mention that it may be a short reach, or a long reach.

Wars have been fought over poop! The agricultural machine must be fed, and many a squabble has been heard over this bird guano infested island or that cave with mountainous bat droppings.

Many people complain that life is sh!t, but where would we be if it wasn’t?

…this time it was a long winded but we’ll written all inspiring piece…

    …that dissappeared just before I posted it…

    …suffice to say…pig farm…

    …manure poured on fields…

    …into ditches…

…streams and finally a family vacation party lake…

    …doomed …

    …dogs couldn’t even swim in it…

…and that is the long and the short of it…

    …in the old movies…

    …they frolic in the straw…

…though a pitchfork usually ends up getting involved…

…and the hills that they climbed…

…were like seasons out of time…

…until Jack fell down from jumping over the candlestick…

    …and Jill came…

    …tumbling after…

…you have to decipher old nursery rhymes…

    …like pirate maps…

…because it would be too easy to find the giant ‘X’ on the tree…

…without doing the Hokey Pokey first…

    …"Hey! “…said Dopey Dan…

…”Could it be this ‘X’ on this tree?…

    … quiet you scallywag…

…we’re looking for a boulder that looks like a frog…
