I was never a geek. The geeks were the ones who had to be told to wear shoes to work and who wrote compilers for fun. But I was proud to be a nerd who could translate geek-speak into human.

Just because I know Star Trek and Star Wars doesn’t make me a geek. I’m terrible with computers.

I was at an auto parts store where employees wear red shirts. A lady working the counter was clearly upset that 2 of her coworkers were outside helping a pretty young woman put on new wiper blades. I told her that they were 2 red shirts on an away mission so clearly one of them was going to die. The guys behind the counter cracked up but she didn’t get it.

I’m defiantly a geek and nerd. And goofball. Programmed computers for over 20 years. Love Star Wars and Star Trek. Do math in my head….because I can. ( and keeps me sharp)

And yes, I get the joke. I consider it a groaner/eye roller. Amusing, but no laugh at loud worthy.

    Dang it!!

Speaking of “Redshirts”, I highly recommend John Scalzi’s novel with the same title. Very enjoyable, very meta book.

I was at a sci fi convention many, many years ago and during a talent portion of the event, someone sang “Mr. Red Shirt Man” to the tune of Secret Agent Man (giving you a phaser and taking away your life.) That was the best parody I have ever heard.

Statistically a gold shirt was more likely to die than a red shirt. Red shirts were given a bad rap because they died so frequently. But in proportion to the number of red shirts and gold shirts that beamed down, the gold shirt was more likely to buy the planet.

I thought Star Wars was kinda mainstream. I’m pretty current on orcs and Jack Vance’s Dying Earth series.

They need to add something about using the force where a computer would seem to have a much better likelihood of calculating the speed and trajectory necessary to precisely launch ordinance to hit a target at high speed.

So a geek would understand it, but would he laugh at a joke that mixed star wars and star trek?

A Nerd is intelligent… And KNOWs things. Usually Science, Math, and Engineering. The Nerds of the world are Engineers and Scientists. They have made the world new things (technology) and perfected how to run it. They can be obsessive about getting it done correctly, and efficiently. They generally don’t care about what others think of them. A Geek is a Nerd-wannabe. They want to be considered a Nerd, but only know the surface stuff. They do care about what others think of them.

One of my favorite spin on the Star Trek franchise was “Galaxy Quest”. One of the best line was issued by Sam Rockwell when he realized he was on a real spaceship and what was going on in space was real and not the studio. He noted that he was the guest star and they usually get killed, so, of course, he panicked.
