Peter should look where he is walking while he is making that snide comment, or in a couple of more seconds in that last panel, he might have wished he was wearing that new invention!
In World War I, balloonists were given parachutes, airplane pilots didn’t get them. Balloons were cheap, airplanes not so much and pilots were expected to bring them back. Mostly it was because that early airplanes could not carry the extra weight.
I’m curious to know just what, exactly, he was attempting to do? Didn’t look as if he were positioning himself for a jump. More like he was just leaning into the wind. Was he going to just slowly topple over the edge?

At least the breeze came up before he jumped.

Looks like it would have worked. It caught the wind just like it’s supposed to do

Caught the wind and pulled the harness. First test – 100%.

You don’t need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive if you want to do it more than once.

Now imagine what that would do in a vertical descent.

Well, it kept him from falling off the cliff.

Better than jumping and finding it does not work.

Well of course that’s all it will do for now, Geronimo won’t be born for a few thousand years.

In the first few hundred tests, the chute dragged someone over the cliff and then collapsed.

why is he walking toward the cliff? an’ without a parachute to boot?!

‘Twas kind of hoping he’d pull a Wile E Coyote so there’d be no Neanderthal DNA today.

I can’t help but think of drag racing cars with that parachute,

At least reverse works. Now aim for forward!

That may be the best possible way for it to work.
