Music Hath Charms to Soothe the Savage Beast. I Know It’s Supposed to be “Breast,” but This Isn’t That Kind of Painting. Why Don’t You Click Back to Yesterday? Perv.
“I’ve pulled thorns out of your paws hundreds of times, but I get one splinter in my palm and you’re all useless. Where’s an opposable thumb when you need one?”
Aphrodite’s Lament: “I get so tired of being nude all the time. It’s only here in the solitude of nature, surrounded by none but beasts, that I’m free to wear a nice frock.”
From a label the artist attached to the back of the painting:
“Aphrodite
There clad herself in garments beautiful / The laughter loving goddess. Gold-adorned / She hasten on her way down Ida’s Mount, / Ida, the many-rilled, mother of wild beasts / And in her train, the grey wolf and the bear, / the keen eyed lion and the swift footed pard, / that hungers for the hind, all fawning came.
Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite"
The Homeric Hymns date to the 8th-9th century BC.The note comes from the page devoted to this painting at the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York City, which seems to own the work.
"Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful. Although I am composed of every desirable feature melded in perfect harmony — truly, I am Beauty Incarnate — yet it is divine Nature which draws every envious eye to fix upon me, not my design nor my heart’s wish. I have a soul. I long merely for understanding, and… Hey, you by the pool! Look at me when I’m talking to you!”

Again, a larger strip image is also shown by merely clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s THROWBACK THURSDAY: MASTERPIECE #2774 (8/19/21) (October 23, 2024) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment. I have added a comment and reply there pointing to info about this artist I used to point to here. So far, 11 works by him have been used here (12 times total, including this Throwback Thursday repeat), the August 19, 2021, strip being its first use, and the latest strip to use one of his works.
I just noticed that my first long string of limericks from yesterday has disappeared (along with the replies of others). They are no longer on My Profile page either. As far as I can recall there was nothing offensive there, so I may try to reconstruct a few of them at some time.
Right now is time for a nap after a red-eye flight from Phoenix to JFK, a too-long ride home in a cab that reeked of cigarettes, unpacking a few essentials, and just dealing with an almost legitimate sounding phone call trying (unsuccessfully) to get bank and or credit card info. (Called the actual fraud dept. to confirm my suspicion that I’d been speaking to a scammer.)
While the Audience’s Attention Was Fixed on Her Right Hand, Aphrodite Deftly Slipped the Queen of Hearts Into Her Bodice with the Left. “Animals are Suckers,” She Thought to Herself. “If They Had Any Money, I Could Make a Fortune Off Them.”

Aphrodite in her crimson nightie strolled
Through the darkened forest bold
Among the hungry canids and felines
That groveled in adoring, swarming lines.
What romantic human tryst might unfold?
.
And she does acknowledge up above
One symbol of her as goddess is a dove
For among mortal men she makes lies
To say she is no goddess lest it terrifies
Them in consuming lust from making love
.
Thus was was caught shepherd Anchises
Who met the goddess in her mortal disguises
As morning light revealed her deception
She gave him news of her conception
Of Aeneas, from whom Virgil’s ‘Aeneid’ arises

My slightly edited comments from 19 August 2021:
/// For the love she inspired, wild beasts sought her,
and she led them all down to the water.
When they stopped at the brink,
one pard took the first drink,
and her spell broke, which started a slaughter.
/// Aphrodite was caught unawares.
“There is blood in that stream,” she declares.
With one taste they grew fierce.
Claws gouge flesh; sharp fangs pierce.
Deceased lions, and tigers, and bears.
