Pessimists: They expect the worst so they’re happy when things go bad… but they spend their lives kinda sour. Optimists: The expect the best so they’re disappointed when things go bad… but they spend their lives feeling pretty good. Realists know the pessimists have the better system.
My father used to try to smackdown people with the phrase, “Well you see, I’m a realist.” He certainly wasn’t. A pipe dreaming narcissist yes. Realist not so much.
I think everything is funny since I realized “They can’t scramble the dregs without breaking the eggheads.” It’s especially funny since the orange puppet is part of the dregs but he thinks it’s only the fools who voted for him who are dregs and meanwhile it’s the moot eggheads who still think “All men are created equal” in some Turing machine sense. (But that original egg was somewhat rotten as regards women, native Americans, and slaves…)
A pessimist is someone who sits sadly at the party all night long, thinking about the mess that there will be in the morning. The Optimist is the person who spends all night enjoying the party and then takes 5 minutes to clean up the mess while the pessimist is still sitting there gloomily thinking about how hard it’s going to be to clean up the mess.
Which one would you rather have writing the software for a nuclear power plant? (Or designing pretty much any system, including political ones?) The one who thinks only the “happy path” needs to be implemented, or the one who realizes that 90% of any robust system is to deal with the various unhappy paths?
I’m a pessimist so I never thought Trump would win. Imagine my unbridled joy when I saw he won in a landslide. I still have a smile on my face. I have an optimist friend who thought Kamala was a shoe-in. He hasn’t smiled at all. My vote is pessimism is better.
From an article written by Sterry Butcher in the New York Times Magazine:
The act of noticing will improve horsemanship, but the heightened awareness also leads to becoming a better person — better at communicating, better at listening, better at being still and calm and in the moment. “People are quite passionate about their horses,” Schiller says. “If they stay passionate for long enough, and they keep asking the right questions, they tend to make changes in themselves that they wouldn’t make for their boss or their co-worker or their husband or their kids. But they make it for their horses. Then it carries over into the rest of life. That’s the amazing thing about what horses do for us.”
There’s a lot to consider but Pastis always reminds me of Archie and Mehitabel, and there’s always a brick headed for Krazy. Wit with a pen, another reminds me of: Dorothy Parker: You can lead a horticulture, but you can’t make her think.

In the long run the pessimist may be proved right, but the optimist has a better time on the trip.
