This is relatable. My wife and I rescued a stray cat and her three kittens back in 2019. My wife passed in 2021, so now it’s just the cats and me. If I see any of them when I leave for some time, I advise them that the mother cat is in charge during my absence. So far, it has worked… I’ve never returned to see the house in a chaotic condition.
I had two cats that were really bonded to each other and only six months apart in age. Johnny Depp was the younger rambunctious cat. Kirby was the mellow, responsible one.
Whenever I left, as I passed Kirby at the top of the outside stairs, I would tell him, “Kirby, you’re in charge.”
I would look back to see him appearing to swell with pride and sitting on the top step, with a cat smile of his face. “I’m in charge .”
When I came back from a month’s business trip, Kirby, who normally meowed about once a day, meowed for fifteen minutes. I knew he was telling how he had missed me and how Johnny Depp had completely ignored his authority. :)

Decide amongst yourselves, as long as the house is clean when I get back, it doesn’t matter to me.

Let’s see. Bird eats fish. Cat eats bird. Dog eats cat.
Ah, heck. You guys figure it out.

Birds are smarter than fish, cats are smarter than birds and dogs are smarter than cats logically the dog will be in charge.
