    Some prefer a 100% Fruitcake-free Christmas.

My mom used to buy us all a fruitcake for the holidays, I was the only one that appreciated it…now I can’t have them.

I have a memory of my father’s employer giving out fruitcakes one year. Since dad was a teetotaler, it was very, very dry. No amount of whipped cream helped.

Use Everclear at 180 and in two bites you don’t care that it’s fruit cake. Oh, you add it after it’s been baked so the alcohol is all there.

With a shot of good Brandy. My favorite is a German Brandy called Asbach.

I’ve had some bad fruitcake, and I’ve had some amazing fruitcakes. Brandy was a most important part of the good ones.

Not THIS plugger. I do require it to be round, dark and gooey and extra-rich with lots of candied fruit especially cherries cut in no smaller than half-a-cherry sized pieces. None of that “loafed” dried out crumbly crap like Claxton’s. But fruitcake if done right does not require any degree of “proof.” Same goes for eggnog.

No booze and definitely no fruitcake. I’m guessing the booze-soaked cake is the only reason some people can stomach it. JMO

My mother-in-law’s best friend always made her a fruitcake for Christmas, which she’d freeze to serve at her church choir’s party the next December – except when we got married it was decided to serve it at our reception as the Groom’s cake. After 8 months in the freezer and 800 miles of August heat, it was rather dry, so my mother, my bride, and her sister Barb – all, shall we say, well over 98 pounds – went to our neighborhood liquor store for brandy to moisten it. After much searching they noticed a shelf of airline-sized bottles behind the counter and asked for one. “Just one?” The clerk asked these three hefty women. “Yeah,” Barb replied. “We’re having a party.”

I’ll take Trifle, thank you. Angel or pound cake, soaked in sherry (or rum or Irish whiskey,) custard, fruit preserve of your choice and whipped cream. Dessert nirvana!

Nice to know I am not the only depraved/deprived one who loves a Fruit-Cake loaded

    with holiday “Spirits”…

Only – no one ever gives me one….

I will have to bake myself a Mince-Meat Pie, also loaded with “Holiday spirits”…..

Forever grateful to the neighbor lady – ’KAY" who used to bake one for my DAD every Christmas….

And to DAD for sharing them with me when I was a child …“Hic”….

    Great Bonding…

One of the reasons I learned to Bake and Cook….…Enjoy the holidays….
