Ever since I read the Charles Dickens novel, ‘David Copperfield’, I compare such people to the fictional character Uriah Heep — an unctuous villain who has become a byword for a falsely humble (‘umble’) conniving hypocrite.
Nowadays, many people don’t even pretend to be nice.
