I miss Hydrox. Hydrox was actually the original chocolate sandwich cookie, made by Sunshine Biscuits in 1908. Sunshine was acquired by Keebler in 1996 and discontinued the cookie in 1999. Keebler was later acquired by Kellogg’s, which sold the cookie line and rights to the Keebler name to Ferrero, which reintroduced the Hydrox cookie by Leaf Brands. [It is available on Amazon for an extremely high price per ounce.]
Oreo was created by Nabisco in 1912 as an imitation of Hydrox. However, people somehow got the idea that Hydrox was the imitator. Kraft acquired the cookie when it merged with Nabisco in 2000; and, in 2012, it became part of Mondelez International when Kraft Foods renamed itself. [Kraft’s North American non-snack grocery business continues is Kraft Foods Group which became Kraft Heinz in 2015]. Mondelez also owns a lot of other snack brands [e.g., Chips Ahoy, Cadbury, Ritz, Trident, Chiclets, Tang, Belvita]. It’s really amazing and depressing that so many ‘competing brands’ are actually owned by the same company. And Mondelez isn’t even in the top 3 — those are Nestle, PepsiCo, and Kraft Heinz.
The difference between the two cookies? Hydrox cookies have a less sweet filling and a crunchier cookie shell that is less soggy when dipped in milk. And, since the 1990s, Oreos have been tweaked to ensure that they are cookies for everyone — they contain no animal products or trans fat and are kosher-certified. However, since they are still manufactured in factories with other products which contain dairy, etc. cross-contamination is a slight possibility.

Some cats just like to eat the “fluffy” filling.
