President Calvin Coolidge was a man of few words. It’s said that on visiting the White House, one visitor told the President that he’d made a bet with the other visitor that he could get “Silent Cal” to say more than two words.

“You lose.” , said the President.

The shortest sentence should have been “No.” by Clyde in the first panel. That would have been shorter than either “I am.” or “I’m.”

The response should not have been “I’m” but “No”. “I’m” has the same number of characters, it is only lacking the space. “No” has fewer characters.

A sentence requires a subject and a verb, except when it’s a command, since the “you” is implied. So, “Go!” is the shortest sentence.
