Has Caufield read Heraclitus. Sounds a bit like non-determinism to me.

Most of the time, it isn’t a conscious decision for the kids involved. For them, come fall, it just happens.

You aren’t paranoid if they really are out to make your life into their vision of correct. “Just happens” is a very kiddish way to think of it… except for natural disasters, and even then rational adults try to (afford to) take steps to ameliorate.

It seems sometimes things just happen TO you, and at other times things happen AT you. It’s the same, except different.

Nothing just happens. There is a person somewhere in each organization that ultimately makes the decision. At least that is what I am told.

For parents, when their first child goes to kindergarten, they feel both fear and a great sense of relief at having time alone, with the guilt that goes with it.

My dad said in his day, you registered for school the morning of your first day, every year and not just kindergarten. And that was long before school districts would have had computer systems, which just barely came about when I started school. You have to wonder what happened.

Since school attendance is mandatory, it’s less of a conscious decision than a case of “resistance is futile”.

Well, some people believe the universe just happened, the first life just happened — after that, it gets easier.

Start investing in your retirement when you’re young. For some reason, that’s one of the most difficult things people ever have to do; it’s something that doesn’t “just happen” and you get just one chance to get it right. Trust me, your older, retired self will by thankful, happy, and proud that you did make it happen.
