Red pandas can be a type of squirrel, if you let them.

One of the reasons red pandas became endangered is that European explorers would capture them and give to family members as pets and red pandas do not do well in captivity.

There are probably more red squirrels than red pandas.

I thought that maybe it was a cartoon character, but when I found pictures online it looked more like a fat squirrel.

According to Wiki a red panda “moves quickly on the ground by trotting or bounding.” so Wallace kind of has it right. It also says they appear to be both nocturnal and crepuscular, so might be a bit more sluggish in the daylight.

Perhaps Wallace has conflated his PJs with the Tanooki suit from Super Mario.
