J.J.: Honey, I have such an amazing vision for your wedding, but it's going to take a lot of prep... Alex: Mom... J.J.: We'll need to cut up 1,000 yards of mylar, fit you for SCUBA gear, rent a calliope, order a vat of Siamese carp... Alex: Mom! J.J.: What? Alex: It's not going to be that kind of wedding. J.J.: What kind of wedding? Alex: The wedding from hell. We decided against that.

Escape, escape… give your feet the chance. Be safe, have a nice clandestine elopement and send pictures of the honeymoon

Or do like I did. From 5 states away tell them on Sunday “Oh, by the way I’m getting married on Wed.”

Are the guests supposed to spear and grill their own carp?.Maybe Zonk should plan the wedding.

I saw a great way to prepare fried carp on the Food Channel… But J.J. would probably go with thermite.

Speak for yourselves. Marriage can also be so much better than living together. What a shame if you haven’t had that experience.
Hufn over 12 years ago
And @basshwyYou should not make such grandiose generalizations just because you haven’t been happy in marriage. That is a shame and I feel for you.
@masterskrainYou might want to look up what causation really means…

But, weddings from hell are so “in” these days!

You can be miserable, or married, too. You need to learn the difference between OR and XOR in Boolean algebra…it would clarify your thought processes no end. :J

I reckon if they really must get married, eloping would be the go. All that fuss – it just puts strain on the relationship and all the family and costs money. Wonder if they’ll sign a pre-nup?

You are absolutely right. Marriage is the best way I know of to end a relationship you’re trying to get out of!

This is the kind of stuff that makes people elope.

I was very happy and in a great fun relationship with my girlfriend. We got married and nearly four years later are even happier, still having fun, made it through tragedy and troubles, and enjoying the heck out of each other, the pet, and the kid. So if you’re unhappy in your marriage my over-generalization is that you (as a couple) are doing it wrong!

As Lou Costello said, “Marriage is like a three-ring circus: first the engagement ring, then the wedding ring, then the suffe-ring!”

Has JJ met Leo yet? And Leo still wants to go ahead with the wedding? :-)

We planned super-small wedding. Bride’s mom at least got “her way” by upping to rental “suitable” jackets on groom and best man. Yosemite was setting, photos with bridal veil fall, appropriate.. 42 years later, the “event” was only a brief moment. “Wedding from hell”, always a bad idea, and waste of money.

For heavens sake, Alex, stay strong! And if I were you, I’d ditch the mother of the bride.

I’m very much afraid that you may be right about it being a dying institution. I saw an astonishing statistic the other — I hope I misread it! — to the effect that 57% of the pregnancies in women in their twenties are unplanned. (Did no one ever tell them where babies come from? Or do they hold their lives and those of their offspring so lightly that they just don’t care?).But outmoded? No. Cohabiting, childbirth, all as casual and disposable as a Kleenex…the formalities of these things have been the glue that has held together every human society in history. Do you imagine that this is an accident, or a coincidence, or merely some dark-ages relic that our enlightened state of being no longer needs? You wish — and actually I hope you’re right, if only because the consequences for the world my son will live his life in are too appalling to imagine.

Do like my oldest son did to evade my ex’s wedding from hell, have the wedding in Costa Rica! It was a beautiful wedding perfectly suited to my son and daughter-in-law. Then of course they fought like hell to avoid the reception from hell back here in Denver. But at least the wedding was exactly what they wanted.

Amen. Coming from a guy who has been wonderfully cared for by lots of great and amazing women, the times when I was married were the happiest.

“After a total of 20 years of marriage, I learned the wisdom of, ‘Why buy the cow when you get the milk for free?’ I’ve been single for nearly 30 years and loving it. The best benefit is peace and quiet.”.That may say more about your attitude toward a relationship with another human being than any of us needed to know. And your premise is flawed: you get nothing for free — either you pay the price, or someone else does..You have a life of peace and quiet? So did Helen Keller. For that matter, so does a stone.

Oh yes it is if you invite JJ. Did it twice — the second time at the JP was definitely the best! Invited my Dad and my brother, his wife and baby.
