Since I avoid getting in the ocean because it belongs to everything predatory in it and I know nothing about surfing (and don’t need or want), I am left wondering if GT is making a commentary on the environment, engineering, surfing, the Netherlands, surfers or it’s a metaphor for a Fat Orange Clown making a buck with “never surrender“ merch by surrendering himself to the Fulton County GA justice system.
Anyone who talks about trump on this one should be careful since he wasn’t mentioned in this one. I got in trouble for that in 2016. And I want to say a hearty f you to anyone who says I was overreacting in 2016. Did you see the mugshot this week? The world changed in 2016 and not in a good way.
Per my comment above, I know hearty means warm and welcoming, vs hardy meaning bold. Consider my meaning in the same way that some use the phrase bless your heart.
Dutch surfers? Okay, I’m going to give prop’s to the “master” for knowing that. As to the ACE trying to save the beach’s with barriers, well I’m thinking we could probably save a lot of money by spending a lot of money moving people away from the beaches.
I attended the World Science Fiction Convention in Den Haag back in 1990 and was totally charmed by the Netherlands. They have so much public art that they put it on the median strips of their roads. The place is flat as a pancake, so bicycles are not only a very efficient form of transportation (and thus ubiquitous), they too are treated as an art form.
Situated as it is in the center of a triangle whose vertices are England, France, and Germany, Dutch is nobody’s second language, and hardly anybody’s third, but the Dutch themselves are amazing linguists. When our little group of SF fans here at the University of Wisconsin was planning our excursion, we enlisted the services of a student from the Netherlands to help us pick up the rudiments of the language. Thruout her tutelage (conducted in perfect English) she was always comparing what we were learning to the way the French or Germans or Italians would say the same thing. Curious, we finally asked her how many languages she spoke (having learned them in her first 23 years), and she apologetically replied “Oh, only six, and my Russian isn’t very good.” Gave us monolingual Americans some proper humility, I’ll tell ya.
Oh, one other little factoid of interest: On average, the tallest people in the world are from the Netherlands. (You could look it up.)
The world is much better off with Biden than Trump. The world views Biden as a strong leader, since the facts show this to be true. Biden has accomplished a great deal. The Biden administration is on track to keep up with LBJ in terms of social justice legislation. Rep Greene of Georgia acknowledged this in one of her recent whiny rants. Biden used her observations in a recent ad.

Only one I can think of is the young lady that lost her arm to a shark, but still became a great surfer.

And then the many offshore wind turbines — not that would be a bad thing, unless one owns stock in the fossil fuel industries.

Hmm… I was expecting a mug shot joke. Perhaps something about the missing horns over the “perfect” Satanic expression?

Any such measures would be temporary. Mother Nature plays the long game.

Our modern, ordinary lives can go on, even after we take steps to adapt to climate change.

Ol’ Surfer Dude could have just said, “Name a single surfer,” and I’d still be stumped.

As a rule, “wave taming” just tends to move the problem along the coast to where the less rich people live. :)

No all beaches suffer erosion. Having their sand excavated to manufacture the concrete surge barriers is a whole ’nother problem.

Disappointing: I’d prefer a repeat of something trenchant.
