Insufficient spin

Elly hasn’t been fired, she’s been made redundant from her job. There’s a big difference! Although the outcome is of course the same: bye bye income. But getting another job is easier if one was made redundant rather than fired, and there should be some redundancy pay as she was working there for quite a few years.

Michael that deserves a big swat! There’s a huge difference between being fired and being laid off (or redundant as they say in some places).

Being fired and laid off are totally different.

I’m surprised he didn’t say “Mom got replaced by a computer!”

How ironic that understanding Michael said it’s time for a change. In about 5 weeks from now, Michael will be heading off to college and changing his life long projects, and saying so long to all his friends!

Elly should do her best while she’s still being paid. But I don’t understand why she’s so stressed and depressed over her unfinished projects.

What is the problem? Elly can mooch off her husband.

To be fair, Michael cannot see the difference between termination and layoff. In fact, he cannot see at all, as that shaggy hair covers his eyes in the fourth panel. That can be solved with a trip to the barber. Michael can get a high & tight or a buzzcut and look extra sharp headed off to college.

Elly: “Michael’s college tuition will cost fortune. We are all going to have to band together, Elizabeth. You will need to sell newspapers and I have to sell my body.”

Elizabeth: “It will be odd that I make more money than you, Mom.”

A common saying: “I have not lived as comfortably as my parents, and I believe my children will not be as well off as I have”.

I hear The Holiday Inn is looking to hire a new Head Sheet Shaver.

You were doing so good there, Michael.

A lot of people do not know the difference between being laid off and being fired. I won’t go into it because others have already done so here. Having worked in payroll, I used to hear that kind of confusion a lot.

One of my functions was to reply to the unemployment people about whether or not someone had been laid off. We were pretty careful to make sure that the ones that were fired for cause did not get unemployment compensation. There weren’t very many.
