I don’t have their food bowls on a shelf, but not ten feet behind me on a shelf are five small chests, each filled with the cremains of a beloved cat.

Memories also make the loss of the animal painful, but we treasure them anyway.

We have the cremains of the last two dogs to pass away in our family in the den (Bear & Lizzie). We never forget the memories.

Horribly sad to lose our dogs (or cats), but we are so blessed to have had their company, and our memories. Definitely worth the pain.

For all the humans of the beloved pets mentioned in this thread, I post this prayer. Just put the name of your pet(s) wherever it reads, “Grayborn.”

Prayer for the Death of a Beloved Pet

    By Rabbi Barry H. Block

O Lord our God, we come before You this day in sadness. Grayborn, who brought us so much joy in life, has now died. His happy times in our family’s embrace have ended. We miss Grayborn.

Help us, O God, to remember the good times with Grayborn. Remind us to rejoice in the happy times he brought to our home. Let us be thankful for the good life we were blessed to give to him.

We are grateful to You, God, for creating Grayborn, for entrusting him to our care, and for sustaining him in our love for a measure of time. We understand that all lives must die. We knew that this day would come. Yet, O God, we would have wanted one more day of play, one more evening of love with Grayborn.

O God, as we have taken care of Grayborn in life, we ask that You watch over him in death. You entrusted Grayborn to our care; now, we give him back to You. May Grayborn find a happy new home in Your loving embrace.

As we remember Grayborn, may we love each other more dearly. May we care for all Your creatures, for every living thing, as we protected the blessed life of Grayborn. May his memory bless our lives with love and caring forever. Amen

When my beloved Crystal died I repurposed her leash as a “lead rope” on my kayak. Now she is with me each time I go kayaking, which is always enjoyable in so many ways. She was buried along with other family pets in the backyard of the family home. When the home was sold it was difficult to leave her.

I had my cats cremated. Also my dog. They are in my living room “sitting” with me. When I lost my dog, I swear I heard her woof at me that same night! I miss my past pets to this day.

I’ve lived in the current house for 37 years and raised six kids here. When I die, my widow will probably sell the house. New owners beware! Till the back yard at your own risk. The sheer number and variety of pet skeletons could be startling, to say as little as possible.

    Memories

Like the corners of my mind

    Misty watercolor memories

    Of the way we were

    Scattered pictures

Of the times we left behind

Smiles we gave to one another

    For the way we were

Can it be that it was all so simple then?

Or has time rewritten every line?

If we had the chance to do it all again

Tell me, would we, would we,

    Could we, could we?

    Memories

    May be beautiful and yet

    What’s too painful to remember

    We simply choose to forget

Can it be that it was all so simple then?

Or has time rewritten every line?

If we had the chance to do it all again

Tell me, would we, would we,

    Could we, could we?

    Memories

    May be beautiful and yet

    What’s too painful to remember

    We simply choose to forget

    So it’s the laughter

    We will remember

    Whenever we remember

    The way we were

    The way we were

    I miss you Farley

    The way we were

    The way we were

I miss you so much Farley

I miss the way we were

Lo, there do I see my father.

Lo, there do I see my mother,

    And my sisters,

    And my brothers,

    And my doggies,

    And my kitties.

Lo, there do I see the line of my people,

    Back to the beginning.

Lo, they do call to me.

They bid me take my place among them,

    In the halls of Valhalla,

Where the brave may live forever!"

The Farley retcon. What parts are true and what parts are lies?

Farley was a funny puppy. True.

Farley had the loudest bark. False. That was Elly. Farley shrank in fear when Elly yelled at him as a puppy.

Farley had energy to burn. False. Most jokes were made of how Farley liked to lie around and how only a few things got him going.

Farley loved to chase the children. Trueish. There is actually only one comic strip of Farley chasing the kids. Mostly Farley with the kids strips were of the kids torturing Farley and him taking it.

Farley loved to catch snowballs in his mouth. True.

    Farley hated peas. True.

I rank this retcon as mostly true 4/6.

I am no one special, just a common dog with common thoughts. I’ve led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me, and my name will soon be forgotten. But in one respect, I’ve succeeded as gloriously as anyone who ever lived. I’ve loved another with all my heart and soul, and for me, that has always been enough.

When Farley the dog really showed his stuff was taking care of April and really the last 4 years have been his best. He stepped up when the parents were stepping down in their responsibilities. He taught her to read. He taught her to speak. When she wandered about the neighbourhood, Farley was there watching over her. Elly should probably be remembering those last 4 years of Farley, except everything he did in that time exposes what she did not do. That is why Elly is concentrating on Farley the puppy.

Farley the puppy was a nice puppy. The last 4 years of Farley, he was exemplary. A model of how you would want a dog to be around your child.

Oh, that’s right, Farley died. They’ve been making such a big production of an obscure guest character going home at the end of what was always meant as a temporary visit, that one could be forgiven for forgetting all about that.

I had to put my lop-eared rabbit to sleep as she had cancer. I brought her home and buried her in my garden. This happened about a week before my wedding. The day before the wedding, a beautiful white flower bloomed where she was buried. I have never seen that kind of flower in my garden either before or since. Was it a coincidence or did she give me a wedding gift?
