Since commenting on comic strips is the only joy left in my life, I doubt that I would ever give anything up for lent.

Giving things up for Lent is viewed differently by different traditions. I’ve always seen it as a time of mindfulness, to pay extra attention to how I’m living. Giving up something can focus your attention. One year, I noticed I was using exclamation points excessively in my written communications. I decided to give up using them altogether for Lent to see how it affected my writing. Definitely made me more thoughtful in how I approached the words I used.

I gave up religion for Lent.

Most of these reruns, I read as a kid in Sweden. But this one is untranslatable, so I never saw it until now.

Once upon a time, I worked at Digital Equipment Corporation as a “TAG” (their in-house temp service). The cafeteria had the best sodas, in bottles…but the root beer bottled actually looked like a BEER bottle. Whenever I had some, I got a lot of double-takes.

It’s not Lent – heck, it’s not even ADVENT yet!

A friend of mine gave up coffee for Lent. As I recall, he was pretty crabby for the first couple of weeks.

Strange, I don’t recall any prior indication of religiosity in the Fox household.

I never developed a taste for beer and liqour.

And here I thought that what you gave up for Kent you gave up for life.
